Considering that...
1) I'm referring to companies like MAC, Bobbi Brown, Clinique, etc.
2) I have no makeup sales or makeup artist experience yet.
3) I live in California (bay area). What is the approximate starting salary of a department store cosmetics salesperson?
It depends on the area. If you have no experience than you would probably start at the low end. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a retail sales person makes between $9 and $15 an hour in California. THis is more than other areas because California, especially the bay area, has an extremly high cost of living.
Most counterpersonnel are paid a base salary and comission based on the products that they sale. like MAC rarely hires people specifically for their counter with no experience. They usually hire from within (i.e someone who has worked at a lower end counter in the same department like Clinique or Bobbi Brown or has been to cosmetology school.) MAC is the hardest counter to break into and when you see adds for department stores (Macy's etc) they are usually for the other counters because their personnel has gotten picked up by MAC.
MAC has the BEST make up artist training and many counter clerks leave MAC to become sucessful makeup artist for movies, photo shoots, weddings, etc.
You may want to try a place like ulta or sephora to get started in the industryWhat is the approximate starting salary of a department store cosmetics salesperson?
if u just start out w/ no experience w/ make-up stores the pay would prob. start @ 7.55 but other than that i have no idea.
15 ? are you insane?
Depends on the department store, but you'll be lucky if you get a few dollars above the min wage.
i would say around $17 to $19 an hour
Minimum wage.
with cosmetics there is an hourly wage (about $5 or minium wage) then you will earn commission on what you sell. the commission rate will differ with each department store. it should range between 3-5% of your sales.
pay with comission should average out to $12-$15 per hour.
probably $6 or $7 per hour at the most.
It has to be around AT LEAST $15.00 an hour. If not, it should be.
My cousin worked at the MAC counter in Macy's Union Square in San Francisco. She started there with no make up experience and was paid between $15-17 per hour.
